The 2016 Queensland Women's Inter-District Matchplay Tournament concluded at Kingaroy Golf Club on the morning of Thursday 8 September with the Central Qld and Central Highlands team remaining unbeaten for the tournament and winning the coveted Meg Nunn Salver as the 2016 Champions.
The 7 District teams that competed were:
Brisbane and District (B&D), Central Queensland and Central Highlands (CQ&CH), Downs and South Western (D&SW), Far North Queensland (FNQ), Gold Coast (GC), North Queensland (NQ) and the host District, Sunshine Coast Burnett and District (SCB&D).
With the weather remaining cold and overcast, the first match between GC and B&D, teed off at 7am. Despite the cloudy skies the weather remained fine and B&D recorded their first win for the event, defeating GC 3 matches to 2.
In the second match NQ was battling hard against CQ&CH and at the half-way point NQ had a narrow lead in 2 matches and were square in another 2 of the 5 matches. This gave SCB&D a faint hope that NQ could win and thereby allow SCB&D to retain their small points lead. In the home stretch, however, the CG&CH players showed great courage and determination to win one of the square matches, turning the potential loss into a squared match (2½ matches each). This was enough to give them the points needed to pass SCB&D and take out the tournament.
It is twenty years since Central Disrict won the Meg Nunn Salver in 1996 and the celebrations will continue for some time yet!
In the final match of the tournament FNQ played D&SW with D&SW winning the encounter 3 matches to 2.
